Hello! My name is Lynn Tarkey, I am a middle school ELA teacher at Orchard STEM School in Cleveland, Ohio. In my classroom student leadership is a primary focus, which is developed by providing students with authentic opportunities to take ownership of their learning. Students set personal and academic goals, lead discussions, collaborate to solve problems, make decisions, reflect on their growth, and serve as mentors and role models for each other. I encourage students to use their voice, take responsibility, and to be accountable. Students maintain leadership binders, analyze text and respond appropriately, participate in evidence-based discussions while presenting solutions to real-world problems through writing and multimedia presentations. This allows literacy and leadership development to occur simultaneously in my classroom.
