I have been learning ASL in continuing education classes and have taught my students many signs and the alphabet. They have also learned about the deaf culture and challenges for deaf children. I would like to expand our reading library to include four or five classroom sets that would include novels about children with disabilities. The sets would clude "El Deafo," "Petey," "Wonder," "The Gift of Girl Who Couldn't Hear," and "Apple is My Sign." When students learn about children with differences they become more tolerant and accepting. Adding these titles to our classroom would help them to "walk in the shoes" of others.
