Growing research links mud play with an outstanding array of benefits to children's development. The very heart of mud play is its sensory nature and the healthful benefits of the "friendly bacteria" in mud include the mood stabilizing effect of the release of serotonin in the brain as children engage in mud play. Children who play in mud often have stronger immune systems and are less likely to have things like asthma and allergies. Children are naturally and historically drawn to mud play. "As long as there have been children, there has been mud play", but in recent decades, children have been allowed only limited access to outdoor play, while spending up to 7 hours each day indoors, in front of a screen. Studies have linked a variety of issues including sensory challenges, ADHD, asthma, and allergies to lack of outdoor play. A mud kitchen will provide hands-on learning that will enhance children's creativity, problem-solving, fine and gross motor skills, language development, science, math, and social skills. The day-to-day access to the mud kitchen will encourage scaffolding in their play as they add new learning to already learned skills. This particular mud kitchen is well-crafted and built to last for decades. The probability exists that the future children of today's preschoolers could be creating mud masterpieces in the same mud kitchen that their parents used!
