We have choice time many times throughout our school day. During this time, students express themselves creatively in any way that they wish. For the most part, it's through play, especially since all of the toys and games in our classroom are neatly organized in bins and easily accessible to students. I've had several students ask to draw and color, write letters to people, write stories together. I've realized that while they have plenty of time during the day for assigned writing, they are not using writing as a tool for independent and collaborative creative expression simply because writing and craft materials are not as accessible to them as toys and games. I don't want students to have to feel that they need to ask for permission to do an "extra" project. I would like for all of these materials to be organized into a writing center so that students can take charge of their own projects! I want writing, drawing, and designing to be a choice that they make during their free time, and to make that happen, they need to be able to access supplies freely and easily!
