With the focus of elementary school shifting to test scores and test-taking strategies, it is my goal to spark the love of reading again. Students in my classroom want books that interest them but our classroom library lacks titles with characters that look like them. All these books have been chosen because they include characters of color that my students can relate to. These stories teach social-emotional lessons that our curriculum lacks. They also provide opportunities for modeling the strategies I want students to be using as they read independently. The best way to become a better reader is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students will be given choice in the books that they select from our library. These books will help develop a culturally rich selection of text that they can enjoy reading.
