The Percy Jackson series has sold more than 20 million copies world wide over the last 10 years. Percy Jackson shows readers that disabilities can actually represent great strengths and bring Greek mythology to life. My students will be able to relate with Percy Jackson being that he's a poor student living in a single parent home. The students will also learn that being a hero doesn't mean you go around saving everyone. Often, it means working toward the greater good and empowering people to save themselves. During class novels we share the excitement, the suspense, the emotion, and the sheer fun of a new book and its intriguing or annoying characters. Reading to children costs nothing! No matter how poor the community, it costs nothing for us to read. With these novels I hope to bring a love for reading back into the classroom. By the time students enter the 6th grade they often lose their love for reading and feel forced or bored with it. By brining in these high interest books during our Ancient Greek unit I hope to ignite a love for reading back into the students that they will carry with them for the rest of their schooling years.
