In recent years, I've seen an increasing number of students with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) in my first grade classroom. These students are bright and enthusiastic about learning but struggle to focus in traditional classroom seating. These students, and primary students in general, need to be able to move throughout the day. Although I currently give my students frequent "brain breaks", this year I am making a commitment to provide students with alternative seating choices that will meet their sensory needs so they can focus on learning. All students in my class will have the opportunity to choose seating that will help them do their best learning and allow those around them to do the same. The Fit-Pro Balls with feet, Wobble Chairs and Air Cushions will help students who need the feeling of movement. The Air Cushions also provide sensory input with their bumpy texture. The Bouncy Bands will provide resistance for students who need to fidget. All of these items are recommended by occupational therapists for students with ADHD and sensory issues. Your generous donations will help these students feel more in control of their behavior and less impulsive because their sensory needs are being met. This will allow them to better focus on learning so that they can achieve all they are capable of academically.
