I recently moved from a Title 1 elementary school where I taught 5th grade to a Title 1 middle school where I will be teaching 6th grade language arts. I have a bookcase in my classroom that is empty and just waiting to be filled with book sets of exciting novels for my new students to read during small group instruction. There is a small library in my school, but there are not sets of the same novel which makes is problematic in using novels for small group reading instruction. Having sets of novels will allow me to work with small groups of students to help them improve their reading comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency skills. I will be using novels as part of my Reader's Workshop where I can help facilitate the learning of my students through reading novels of different genres. This will allow me to be more effective in teaching reading comprehension strategies such as summarizing, making connections, using context clues to clarify meaning of the text, visualizing, asking questions during reading and modeling for students how to self-monitor their own reading. Students will also practice thinking critically and formulate written responses to the text they read. They will also create a project of their choice to present to the class of what they learned from the novel they read. My hope is that their enthusiasm for the books they will read will encourage their peers to read and create a lifelong love of reading. I and my students would be so appreciative of your donations to make this project a reality. Thank you from my heart!
