Our district incorporates a balanced literacy program, it uses whole language and phonics and aims to include the strongest elements of each. The components of a balanced literacy's approach are read alouds, guided/ shared reading, interactive/ shared writing, reading/ writing workshop and word study. Technology in the classroom will help aid students to be successful during independent work. The CD player is needed for our istening station. Hearing a book read on tape helps the student see how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way. It helps them focus on the sounds of words read without interruption and provides a model of fluent reading. Audio books also gives them an important introduction to listening which is a skill that students must master in order to learn to read.
