Community: We will be actively engaging our school community while creating a better, cleaner environment. We will be teaching our students and talking to them about how they can clean our school environment and their community. We will be encouraging students to take action to better our school community and beyond by collecting recyclables. The money raised from our recycled crafts fundraiser will be donated to an environmental nonprofit. Collaboration: We will be collaborating with teachers and students across multiple grade levels. Students will initially work in small groups within each class then bring their work to the larger group. Building upon students’ learning and findings from their research, all students will collaborate and generate ideas and solutions to make a positive impact on our community and environment. Creativity: We will provide opportunities for children to create new ideas and products by reusing, recycling, and repurposing recyclables found at our school site and from home. The students will create various products such as bottle cap magnets, planters and pencil holders reusing plastic bottles, stationery items such as hand-made recycled paper. To encourage multiple learning styles, students will create posters and service announcements, put on plays and skits to promote what they learned. Critical Thinking: Students will be taught problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Focusing on recycling, students will be addressing issues around the world and come up with ideas on how they can take part in solving these issues within our school community. Students will be generating questions and find answers through research. Communication: Students will create posters to educate the rest of the school and community about what can be recycled and also encourage the school community to separate their recyclables from trash at school. They will then host a museum at school to share their completed projects.
