We are living in an interesting time, political and social justice issues are at the nation's forefront. As a result, my students are deeply involved and connected. They are particularly aware of controversies involving people of color and the police. The Hate U Give is an award-winning novel that will engage students in the complex issue of race in America. My students will see themselves in Staar Carter. Learning how to navigate conversations about race and social justice issues, is a college-ready skill that is often looked over. It is a skill that Staar has to learn in the book and that my students can apply in their own life. Reading a book about a relevant issue, written by a woman of color, staring a protagonist of color, will engage my students and increase their literacy level.
