After being prompted by our principal, the fourth and fifth grade teachers decided to become departmentalized and leveled after we returned from Christmas break. We completely changed everything we knew to benefit our students and reach every one of them. We created three leveled fourth grade groups from low to high and two leveled fifth grade groups from low to high. I began teaching fourth and fifth grade informational text, writing, and language arts while another teacher began teaching all the literature texts. We had such success that we agreed to continue this new way of teaching into this upcoming school year. While I am excited about continuing teaching informational text, I have found that I am in desperate need of informational materials especially for centers. I love incorporating center work into my classroom as often as I can, but I need more activities to use. Centers benefit students for a variety of reasons: they are hands-on, can be one-on-one, small group, independent, engaging, and differentiated, which is why I want to continue to incorporate them in my classroom. I have found some engaging, high-interest, and differentiated informational text materials that would be great to use in centers or whole group teaching. I think these activities would be a great way to emphasize a variety of informational standards.
