This group of students cannot remember a time when our country was not actively fighting terror. Many are directly impacted by parents or siblings who have served in the Armed Forces. My AP students will explore the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder on men and women who have served our country through research and by using the requested copies of Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut as a primary text. We will analyze literature and make connections between Vonnegut's WWII-era narrative and our current situation. We will conduct research into the ways our culture helps veterans re-integrate into civilian life when they return home from active duty. We will also discuss the impact of trauma on the human psyche and attempt to assess the intangible costs associated with defending our nation's freedom. My students will hone their reading, analysis, research, writing, discussion, and debate skills.
