My students need 30 copies of How to Teach Literature Like a Professor. Thought the last number of years I have taken excerpts from this text as a way to introduce literary concepts to my students. Each chapter focuses on one key element or genre of literature; Poetry, Symbolism, Biblical allusions, Greek Myths, Shakespeare, Fairy Tales... This year I would like each student to have a copy as a reference throughout the year. We develop a vocabulary of literature and a language thorough which we can analyze and evaluate each literary text we read. This is an accessible text for all my students. They find it challenging and entertaining at the same time and each chapter engenders critical thinking and a lively discussion of the unit we are about to start. Students see the benefit of what they are reading throughout the year as we come across the topics in the literature we read.
