Students with dyslexia often have difficulty paying attention because reading is so demanding. It can cause them to fatigue easily limiting their ability to sustain concentration. Brain research supports the link of movement and physical activity to increased academic performance. My classroom is a place where students acknowledge their learning difference and embrace who they are. I have created a risk free environment where mistakes are ways to help us grow as readers. They are discovering their best learning styles and rebuilding their self-esteem. My students are creative and smart. They learn best when they can talk and move. Providing my students with Gaiam backless balance ball chairs allows for movement, enhances their learning and retention of the content. My classroom is the place where they close the learning gap. It takes concentration and focus. Their time in their general classroom can be challenging. I have a container of Thinking Putty in my classroom for my kiddos that need to "fidget" productively. They are always asking me if they can bring it to their classrooms. I have at least 10 students who benefit from the act of manipulating the putty. It relieves stress, strengthens the hands, and allows "quiet" movement in the class. The 8 pack of putty and fidget toys, will allow them to bring it to their classrooms. These students deserve an environment that enhances their ability to learn. Dyslexia is an issue that affects reading and spelling. It is a brain difference that causes them to need a different teaching approach. Meeting my students needs with active seating and thinking putty, will allow them the best environment for their brains. "We have to teach children HOW they learn, not what WE think they SHOULD learn" (Henry Winkler).
