I am our school's only School Counselor, serving a population of approximately 750 students. While this is a daunting task to say the least, I enjoy the work and relish when I see student faces beam with excitement when small steps towards success are achieved, such as when they receive a college acceptance letter to a school they thought was out of their reach, or when a student is able to put together a resume and realize they look pretty appealing to a prospective employer and/or college admissions office, or when a student is able to complete their FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)as a first step toward affording a post-secondary education.
A working computer that can provide access to websites will exponentially increase the students ability to apply and research college and career resources. I am fortunate to work in a community filled with students that are constantly seeking opportunities that will better themselves and their community. Unfortunately technology is one of the barriers that can thwart their efforts.
The area in the photo is an area I have dedicated to Career and College success. It is filled with college and scholarships materials. However there is not a computer. I would like this computer to be the first in hopefully many more that students can use to fully realize their potential to achieve success through research and hard work. A computer will be a tool that they can use to change their lives.
