Almost all of my students have never traveled outside of Louisiana and many have never left Baton Rouge. Imagine learning about the Roman Coliseum, the Greek Parthenon, and the Great Wall of China all through the classroom experiences. This is much harder for most of my 6th and 7th grade students because they still read at a 3rd grade level. Research has shown that increased reading skills will lead to higher achievement levels in all areas of schoolwork. Let's give them interesting and colorful magazines to own that they can read for fun. They may not even realize they're learning!
