My students are from middle to lower class families in an 98% Hispanic community. They are hard working and care about their classmates. The biggest thing I see within the student body is a sense of family. They care about each other and take pride in their school. The arts have had tough times these past 5 years and the students know that the choral arts were about to be cut from the school on multiple occasions. Despite the lack of support these kids love to sing. They love to create harmony and I have encouraged them to tryout for honor choirs and other projects and some of them have represented our school in those honor choirs. This past April we were invited to sing at Carnegie Hall and only 26 were able to make the trip out of 36. They had to fundraise their whole trip. It caused some disunity within the group. I want to boost their spirits and unify them by showing that people care about their success as singers and upstanding citizens of society.
