Because my students struggle daily with belonging and acceptance, they can get a REAL authentic experience of love and responsibility by having fish in our classroom. We already have a tank and have been approved to participate in "Trout in the Classroom." The only thing standing in our way is an external filter and the few other needed supplies. My students will experience real responsibility because they will need to complete all the tasks in providing care for our fish. Our fish will be delivered to us as eggs and we will watch them grow into fingerlings. Daily tasks include feeding, testing water quality, and cleaning of the tank. Students will need to keep an accurate count of the fish because this number will be reported back to "Trout in the Classroom." Academically, students will learn about fish habitat and the importance of keeping our streams clean. Emotionally, my students will practice kindness and caring. They will gain a great feeling of accomplishment because the love they give our fish will come to fruition in the spring. We will take a walking field trip to a local stream and release the fingerlings in the wild. Having this experience will GREATLY impact my students.
