Teaching sewing machine skills to Intermediate students creates confidence in them. It helps them develop skills and abilities to pursue projects that are more challenging and rewarding.. Their first actual sewing project has them carefully cutting out and sewing squares together, matching the corners of course, for the front of a bag. Next, they are ready to tackle the zipper and then sew the back carefully, using quality workmanship (do it right or do it over)! At this point students want to find their own project to test their ability to read and follow pattern directions and master more complex sewing skills. The Scrunchie is always the project that is always requested, including the boys! Each student has to search for a scrunchie pattern online to follow. The whole period or even two, is spent on making many scrunchies for friends, family and a few for themselves.. To compliment and direct their learning, I want to have them design and create a sports or duffel zippered bag that reflects their style and personality. This experience forces students to use their creativity and sewing abilities to create a product that they will take pride in. When it is completed, they will proudly carry their designer bag around school for other students and teachers to admire their sewing skills and their designing talent! This will be a showcase piece that will have friends and family wanting to have them make one for them!.
