Basketball is a schoolwide interest and has the potential to be an invaluable motivator for our West Philadelphia students. To generate student engagement in the classroom and unity in the school and surrounding community, I am planning a middle grades intramural program for the 2017 - 2018 school year that revolves around basketball, dedication, teamwork and responsibility. This extracurricular basketball program will encourage dedication not only on the court, but also in the classroom. With involvement from our neighbors at St. Joseph's University, school staff members and parents/guardians, we will have the knowledge and support to develop our students into strong students and leaders. I hope that we can expand this intramural program into a West Philadelphia basketball league for boys and girls, building unity between the local neighborhoods in our community and encouraging our students to be leaders on the court in their schools, their community and throughout the city of Philadelphia. We need basketballs, a cooler, pinnies, cones, a clipboard and whistles.
