Using my personal resources I was able to obtain one classroom set of a Bluford series book to start the school year; my students are truly engaged and learning! Unfortunately, I simply cannot afford to fund another classroom set. I have searched our school library and I do not have access to classroom sets for any books in this series and am therefore asking for your help.
The stories in Bluford High books take place in an environment that mirrors my student’s homes; in essence these are stories about my kids. Our study of the Bluford High content and vocabulary gives my students greater functional access to their real world.
For example, using this series last week our vocabulary words were: Diagnosis, radiation, and chemotherapy. My pre-assessment data showed that my students were almost totally unfamiliar with these terms.
After reading about cancer in the Bluford series my students can now comprehend a conversation about cancer treatment. It is likely that over the course of their lives they will need this information. The Bluford series is filled with this type of information in an accessible format.
Please help my students gain the understanding and vocabulary that they will need to be successful and productive adults in their community. Thank you for your support!
