Students in Del Norte County see the tallest trees in the world everyday. Although Redwood National and State Parks is a "bucket list" destination for millions of people around the world, many of our local population think of these parks as "being for other people." Due to the many barriers that face an underrepresented population, a significant number of my students have never taken a walk among these woods, along its clean rivers, or on its coastal beaches, even though they may live just steps away. My outdoor education program wants to change this for them. I want to expose students to the many opportunities that lie within these forests, from recreation, health, and wellness to career opportunities. I want them to understand not only what a unique biome this is, but that it is easily accessible to them. I want to inspire stewardship in them, so this amazing forest will benefit students for generations to come.
