I want to breathe some life into my AP Language curriculum and embark on a true crime unit that will include both this novel, In Cold Blood, and the podcast Serial. AP Language is a study of rhetoric, how writers make deliberate choices to engage with their audiences and achieve their purpose. In Cold Blood is a perfect study this skill. Why do we as readers develop sympathy for the killers in this book? Because of the way that Truman Capote wields the power of language. That's an amazing lesson that I want my students to learn. Many of my students choose to purchase their own copies of the books we read, but not all students are economically able to do so. This project will ensure that there are enough copies of the novel in our school library for students to check out during the unit.
