Interactive notebooks are a fun way for students to demonstrate their knowledge of math standards. The purpose of the interactive notebook is to enable students to be creative, independent thinkers and writers. Interactive notebooks are used for activities where the student will be asked to express ideas and process the information presented in math. By cutting, coloring, and pasting, students will create a personal treasure displaying their first grade math topics. Students cut out pieces of paper with movable parts and demonstrate their knowledge by writing answers under the flaps. Other activities consist of sorting cards into different pockets, and coloring pictures to represent addition and subtraction facts, place value, and measurement/data. Since our district has moved away from traditional workbooks, the interactive notebooks will enable students to still have a hands-on learning experience and to display their learning in a creative and memorable way. They will be able to take these notebooks home to share with their parents and to remember their first grade accomplishments.
