Stories stick with us forever: Atticus Finch's bravery, Katniss Everdeen's fire, Harry Potter's dedication. As an educator in my hometown in rural Appalachia, I have made it my mission to get even the most reluctant of readers engrossed in stories they will remember for a lifetime and foster a lifelong love and passion for reading. My students do not allow themselves to be limited by circumstance: they hunger for new experiences, they want to expand their horizons, and open their minds. Although they live in a rural area (75% of our school is free/reduced lunch, nearly 20% of the population lives at or below/poverty line) they do not allow themselves to have labels or limits placed on them. We travel in my classroom: books are the tickets we use to transport ourselves to new places, where we can be who/whatever we want. Books are the vehicle by which we find the world. Simply stated: We. Need. Books.
