The majority of my students live in poverty, and many of them assume that they will work the same job as their parents. They do not believe that they have the skills or money to go to college. We live in a small town in the south, and most of my students are surrounded by family. Students in my school receive free breakfast, lunch, and dinner; the coaches host fundraising activities in order for students to be able to have tennis shoes and necessary supplies. A local church sponsors the Matthew House, a variety store where item can be purchased for a quarter; the local church also has a food pantry. The school participates in the "Backpack Program" so that students may take a backpack full of canned goods home each weekend. While most of my students struggle financially, many of them are academically advanced; however, because of their home situations, some of them have to take an afternoon job or have to care for younger siblings while their parents work.
