I would like to bring a club time back to our students, and show them a skill that they can use to make a warm hug for themselves or someone they care about. In the cold and snowy winters of Wisconsin, the only thing better than cozying up in a soft scarf is knowing that you made it yourself! It is enormously satisfying to make something yourself, and have it be something that you or someone you love will use every day. Our students do not get a chance to learn a hobby in school, since so much of their time is focused on academics. Before school, on Fridays, I am gathering a group of students together to teach them how to knit. While I am trained as a special education teacher, I am also a recovering craft addict, who has professionally taught crafting courses. I've noticed our students do not have a hobby, something that they can occupy their time without costing much money. I chose soft yarns and easy to knit with aluminum needles, so that students can learn to make a simple scarf. They will work on this throughout the semester so they can use it themselves, or give it as a holiday gift.
