My classroom is a self-contained special education classroom comprised of students diagnosed with Autism and who are non-verbal. I create programs for every IEP objective that each student has that is run daily based on ABA principals by behavioral therapists and paraprofessionals. Some of my students attend certain academics, lunch, and/or specials with peer models in an inclusion classroom. My students need these iPads to be able to access the curriculums we have available for them. We use a Direct Instruction program on the computer that is animated and attractive to students. We have a reading and literacy program that assesses where the students are in their language and literacy development and starts their learning there. We also are fortunate enough to have a math program online available to us that works the same as the reading and literacy program. In a large self-contained classroom of 14 students whom are in either Kindergarten or 1st grade, it is hard to have time to instruct each student or groups of students based on their appropriate levels while keeping the other students busy and engaged. If we had these iPads in our classroom, each student could be engaged with learning at all times whether using the iPad, individually, or within a small group. It is crucial for us to get as much learning and instruction done during the day to help our students learning, grow, and develop into the best individual they can be. "We give them roots so they can grow and wings so they can fly."
