As a teacher in a Title I school that is in a suburb of New Orleans with 90% free and reduced-price lunch, our students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges their young lives have faced, my students are curious, enthusiastic, and creative, and eager to immerse themselves in all academic challenges. I serve students with special needs as well as students who are English Language Learners who parents have located here to provide their children with a better quality of life. Many of our students come from single-parent homes, because of domestic violence and many have experienced some kind of trauma in their lives that affect them greatly, and in turn, impact their academic performance. In addition, approximately 25% of our students are homeless. Although their personal backgrounds put them at a disadvantage they bring their smiles into the classroom every day.
