My students attend a small rural public school in west-central Louisiana where strong relationships and a close-knit community help every child feel known and supported. Our school serves a predominantly White student population, with a growing Hispanic community, and more than half of our students come from families who qualify for free or reduced-price meals. Many of my students face the challenges that often come with living in a rural community, including limited access to educational resources and enrichment opportunities outside of school. Despite these obstacles, they are curious, hardworking, and eager to learn. They thrive when they have engaging, hands-on learning experiences and access to quality classroom materials.
