Without a doubt, desks in a classroom are something every student uses every single day. Desks provide a surface for writing, using technology, experimenting, discussing, and reading. It is, literally, the foundational surface needed for learning to take place. Our school is a wonderful place where outstanding learning takes place, however, students in our building do not have their own individual desks in the classroom. Instead every classroom is furnished with tables for students to work at. While there are many benefits to having students work together at tables, there are also some drawbacks. Some of the drawbacks include: students sitting too close together and being easily distracted by others; students being forced to turn around during instruction in order to see; finding student work groups that are productive; trying to separate students during assessments; and the list goes on. By supporting our project and helping us get desks in our classroom, you are providing students their own space, yet allowing for the flexibility for students to still work with others, collaboratively. Your generous donation to our project, will not only help improve our daily routines, you will ultimately help increase each student’s sense of responsibility. Individual desks will also free up classroom space allowing us to create more space for active learning. This is important towards helping our struggling students and providing them an area they can call their own. A place where we, as teachers, can provide more intense and individualized instruction to each student all while eliminating the unnecessary distractions that comes with working at crowded tables. The individual desks we are requesting in this project will provide this area in our classrooms and enhance our students learning.
