Once upon a time in a classroom not so far away, students were being inspired to create one-of-a-kind projects to help fairy tale characters solve their problems. In this project, we will combine lessons on understanding literary elements and map skills with fabulous STEM challenges. As my students compare and contrast Rapunzel stories from around the world, they will then use their knowledge of mathematics, engineering, and more to show how Rapunzel could have escaped the tower without using her hair. Does the story of the three little pigs changed based upon point of view? My students will answer this while designing the best pig’s house to withstand the wolf’s might blow. Lastly after my students examine sequencing of various three little bears stories, they will design a chair for baby bear that Goldilocks will be unable to break. But the fun doesn’t stop there! My students will learn critical map skills while visiting several enchanted realms with “The Once Upon A Time Map Book.” Why mix fairy tales with STEM? According to research, picture books are a wonderful tool to help pique students’ interests in scientific and engineering exploration, allowing my students to be “happily-ever-after” learners.
