Students will read and utilize the novel, Speak, as a tool for a range of learning topics. Students will complete close reading, at home and in class journal entries, answer text-based questions, analyze quotes, discuss and identify literary elements including, but not limited to, foreshadowing, mood, tone, characterization, and figurative language. UDL is also implemented as students choose from an array of creative choices, including presenting their own idea for their final project. This unit creates space for important topics impacting students' lives. They will explore the topics of Self-Expression and how one expresses him or herself, as well as be able to define sexual assault, empathy, and research and present resources throughout the community and city of Boston for survivors of sexual assault.
