I co-teach a 6th grade inclusion class of at-risk and special education students. Our class starts each year by reading a book called "Freak the Mighty." This book is about a young boy with a physical disability and another young man who struggles with a learning disability in the area of reading. Individually they consider themselves "freaks", but they find that together they are "mighty." This book always speaks to my students because they can relate with the characters and their struggles academically and emotionally to fit in. Often at the end of the school year many of my classroom book set disappears, and I have to find money to replace those books. I don’t want my student to feel like they must steal to have a book. I would like to be able to give my students their very own books. Individually they struggle, but with your help together they are mighty.
