My students are 11th graders at a predominantly low-income school. We are in a community that is very strong, but many students don't see themselves as capable of attending college. We work hard to develop that identity so that students can go to college, come back to our community and make it better for everyone. Students are bright and inquisitive and are curious about the world around them. I encourage them to ask and answer questions using scientific thinking and reasoning, but they often have difficulties linking the classroom to the real world. This means that engagement needs to be high and any activity has to offer many avenues of action, movement and collaboration.
