Human Rights are an integral part of UN sustainability goals and my students are young upstanders with a passion for getting out in their community to make a difference. Our yearly theme of human rights helps my students to see what their world is like and how they each play a critical role in changing what they see as an issue. By purchasing The Rock and the River by Kekla Magoon and Enrique's Journey by Sonia Nazario, students will have the opportunity to explore culturally relevant human rights issues. Through deep analysis and synthesis of these two texts, students will learn about different cultures as well as study the human rights issues involved with those cultures.
