In my Title 1, First Grade classroom, my 18 students are full of curiosity and the wanting to learn. They are approximately half English Language Learners, speaking Spanish at home. They are always asking questions and want to know everything about our units. Recently, when given the choice of a read-a-loud, they unanimously chose a children's biography on Barack Obama! Our school agreement is Be Responsible, Be Respectful and Be a Problem Solver. Students work hard on learning how to communicate to solve problems instead of resorting to other methods. You often see kids using a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors to settle disagreements. Communication is key to working through problems, whether you are six years old or forty years old and that is what I want my children to learn in my classroom.
