Education is currently focused on early reading and literacy skills. An engaging classroom library and time to both read independently and listen to stories being read aloud will help students tackle these skills head on.
Research has shown that students benefit as much from being read to, as reading independently; however, Students do not always have equal access to the types of reading literature or parents who are able to read to them aloud at home. I would like to use the materials I am requesting to provide my students with fun content-based literature they can access in my classroom. I would also like to use the bilingual chapter books to help provide my Hispanic with reading materials they may take home to enjoy reading aloud with their parents in a language their parents are able to read. The pillows and cushions are for the students to have quiet and comfortable areas in the room where they may engage in weekly quiet reading time, something that is not always available to them in their homes.
