My students are from an impoverished town on the Ohio River at the northern most area of Appalachia. They are 50% mixed race, 80% single parent, and 90% below poverty level for family income. They are, however, resilient, tough, and fragile dreamers. They know they want to make the future better, but in doing so, know they must leave town and may not find employment here afterwords. That makes dreaming a little difficult. However, it is in my classroom I get the wonderful opportunity to see their creative and expressive sides. Our school has a rich history of being the center of our town's pride since 1882. Through incredible efforts of staff, it has had post secondary enrollment at 75%. The population has shrunk in the past 10 years and has become consolidated with the seventh and eighth grades. Performance on standard testing has been less than stellar. Our students are much better at doing than testing.
