Our Garden Project has been a labor of love for many, especially the students. In the past 3 years they have brought back to life a garden that had gone to weeds. Their favorite part of the week is "garden time." While there are many factors in determining a predisposition to obesity and/or developing type 2 diabetes, socioeconomic status and race, respectively, are among the leading indicators. A significant percentage of our students are currently receiving subsidized lunches (38%) and we have a large base of minority students, all of whom are statistically at greater risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Students participate in all garden activities, including recycling composting, vermicomposting (it's true, kids LOVE worms!) The hope is the children will learn and make positive decisions in their life to positively affect our planet.
