The students at my suburban school are a cross section of the communities around us. They are artists, actors, musicians, academics, future farmers - and in general, they are also ambitious. I have high expectations for my students, as do all of my colleagues. At the top of my list is that they make the most of opportunities that they are fortunate enough to have. We have a rigorous curriculum that prepares students for life beyond our walls, whether they choose to go to college, into a trade, into the military, or do something non-traditional. I want one of the opportunities my students have to be reading good, interesting books. It is well known that people who are avid readers are better writers. I have seen it in my students' work for years. Their vocabulary is richer, there is variety in their sentences, they have creative ideas. I expect to see great things from the addition of free reading to our classes.
