Imagine walking into a classroom where 6 and 7 year olds are wiggling and moving while learning and focusing at the same time. This is my vision for my upcoming group of first graders. I hope to expand flexible seating to all areas of the classroom so that students are allowed to pick the seating that best fits their needs. Do you remember the hard metal chairs that filled your childhood classroom? Do you remember being told to stop getting out of your seat or moving your chair because it was making noise? What if you were able to wiggle while you read, completed math problems, or began writing a story? Would this allow you to focus more on the concept you were learning? By adding flexible seating to the classroom, I am hoping to dig deeper into learning while students are more engaged in their work. The donations for this project will improve my classroom by reducing the amount of behavioral issues. I will be able to provide the appropriate stimulation that my students need to focus. As you consider giving to my future students, ask yourself a simple question. If you were asked to sit in a chair with 4 legs all day without moving, expected to focus, and do your best learning... Could you do it? If the answer is no, how can we expect 6 and 7 year olds to do the same? With less behavioral issues and more focus, we can increase our learning and time on task. I'm looking forward to seeing my students happier and ready to learn.
