I teach in what is considered to be one of the poorest most violent cities in America, Camden, New Jersey. Despite this environment and the many challenges that they face; my students come to school eager to learn. The population of the student body at Woodrow Wilson High School is 60% African American and 40% Latino. I am a cosmetology teacher for the CTE department. The Career and Technical Education Program is designed for students who may wish to enter the world of work upon completing high school. The Introduction to Cosmetology course is an overview of the foundation concepts of the cosmetology program. It will enable students to comprehend and perform entry level skills. The skills and concepts learned in my class will enable students to make connections in their academic classes where by improving literacy and comprehension. It also introduces them to a lucrative career that can improve their lives.
