Students in our special education classroom often struggle with academics and social skills. Although these skills are taught by giving direct instruction, students also learn valuable information and skills in a more relaxed environment. Last year our students worked collaboratively to build a small Lego city. Students who had been having frequent, negative interactions with each other began working together to create the city and began building friendships as they built the structures. In addition, the Legos were used to build academic skills. Students measured the perimeter, height, distance and length of the structures and roads. They also made comparisons between structures and wrote a short report. We would use these Legos to build academic and social skills within our classroom. Students would work in teams to build and program the structures, provide measurements, write a summary of the process, create a story and finally present their final products. For most of our students who live in this low-income community, this is their only opportunity to work with these types of items. Thank you for considering our request.
