Multicultural literature serves as an important tool not only for students to better understand their culture, but to understand the different cultures of their classmates too. Multicultural books also help to build empathy, respect, and acceptance of others. Multicultural literature fosters positive self-esteem and prevents students from feeling isolated. I will use these books to help build community in my classroom and promote unity. It is important for young children to see and read literature that highlights differences, and that shows them all children feel the same emotions no matter where they live in the world, what language they speak, or how they look.
