I work at an elementary school in a high poverty area, and 100% of our students receive free lunch. Despite their surroundings and home environment, these bright students come to school everyday ready to learn and to do their very best. Many of these kiddos come to school hungry, tired, and carrying the weight of hardships that no child should ever have to experience. Some of my students have to care for themselves and their siblings when they get home because one or both of their parents work at night. However, you would never guess this walking into our rise and shine assembly in the morning. If you were to visit my school, you would see a bunch of smiling students who are happy to be at school and excited to learn. School is a safe place where these children just get to be kids, and they know they will be protected and cared for by their teachers. We have the best students, and I am so fortunate to get the opportunity to make a difference in their lives.
