As a second year kindergarten teacher, it didn’t take me long to learn that five and six year olds need to move while they learn. Kindergarten children struggle to sit in a traditional classroom seat. They are constantly wiggling, fidgeting, and squirming around. This natural movement of these young children becomes dangerous when they accidentally flip their chair and/or fall out of it. My current and past students have expressed many times that their chairs are uncomfortable. One of my students even asked why he couldn’t have a “comfy” chair like mine. Many of my students would rather stand than sit on their current chairs. My plan to improve the learning environment for my kindergartners is to replace our traditional chairs with Kore Wobble Chairs. These stools will enable students to move safely at their table groups while they do their work. The Wobble Chair’s base is slightly rounded on the bottom, allowing for a gentle rocking movement. This provides subtle input to the vestibular system, making it an awesome sensory strategy to promote engagement and attention in the classroom. Often times, my most active students will begin rocking or climbing in their seats and on many occasions have even fallen out of their chairs. Children are constantly in motion and I feel my classroom should meet their needs to help them learn and work in a comfortable and safe way. Research has shown that movement triggers brain activity and alertness. Kore Wobble Chairs will help my students concentrate on their tasks while strengthening their core stability as well. Some of our students who have been diagnosed with ADHD or Autism already have alternative seating available to them, but all young children can benefit from the option of alternative seating. The stools will remain stable for those students
