In science, my students create and maintain their own interactive notebooks during the school year instead of being assigned copies of the same textbook. Interactive notebooks are a wonderful resource for students because they allow the information to be manipulated and students have varying levels of freedom to be creative so they may take ownership of their own learning. The notebooks are used for diagrams, notes, cutouts, mini handouts, and foldables. It is important for students to have choices so they can own their learning and to always be aware of their progress. Students will have the opportunity to track their progress throughout the school year by keeping a science folder that will contain a table and graph of their common assessments and a checklist of the main learning objectives. They will also use the folders to keep all graded and nongraded assessments. The notebooks and folders will ensure that all students have a chance to create and own their learning. No student will have to fall behind due to a lack of supplies.
