Research has also shown that success in a students' first language will translate to a greater rate of success in their second language. For this reason, it is important for educators to foster and encourage the continued usage of students' first languages. This is especially true for newcomers who have been impacted by distance learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All students, regardless of language, need access to high-quality literature that they can use to practice their reading skills. For the newcomer English learners in my school, that means reading texts in Spanish. Our school does not currently have a Spanish section in our library, and this project would remedy that. This project specifically hits Nevada Academic Content Standards for reading literature. RL.10 for multiple grade levels requires that students be able to access and comprehend grade-level texts. For example, standard 2.RL.10 states, "By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories and poetry, in the grades 2–3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range." With books in their native language, newcomer students will be able to read literature that is on their grade level and in a language they can comprehend, while they are busy learning English in the classroom.
